Ihr mit ihrem Namen betiteltes Debütalbum wurde 2006 veröffentlicht und von der RIAA mit Doppel-Platin ausgezeichnet. Aus dem Album erreichten vier Singles die Top Ten der US-Country-Charts; in den US-Pop-Single-Charts kamen drei der Singles in die Top 40.

Taylor Swift wurde in Wyomissing in Pennsylvania geboren und lebt mit ihren Eltern und ihrem Bruder in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Ihre Großmutter war eine professionelle Opern-Sängerin; Swift interessierte sich mehr für Country-Musik von Künstlern wie LeAnn Rimes, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Dixie Chicks und Shania Twain.

Im Alter von zehn Jahren begann Swift, rund um ihre Heimatstadt an Karaoke-Wettbewerben teilzunehmen und bei Festivals und Messen als Sängerin aufzutreten.
Dafür schrieb sie bereits eigene Songs. Mit elf Jahren versuchte sie in Nashville bei verschiedenen Plattenlabels einen Vertrag zu erhalten. Als dies fehlschlug, arbeitete sie weiter an eigenen Songs. Mit 14 Jahren wurde sie bei einem Auftritt in einem Café von Scott Borchetta entdeckt, der sie für sein neues Plattenlabel Big Machine Records verpflichtete.

Bei den MTV Video Music Awards 2009 in New York City gewann sie in der Kategorie „Best Female Video“ mit dem Video zu You Belong With Me unter anderem vor Beyoncé Knowles. Daraufhin ging Rapper Kanye West auf die Bühne, unterbrach Taylor Swifts Dankesrede und sagte, dass eigentlich Knowles den Preis hätte gewinnen müssen. Auch US-Präsident Barack Obama äußerte sich zu dem Vorfall und nannte West einen Trottel („He is a jackass“).

Swift spielt eine „Taylor“ Grand Auditorium, eine akustische Western-Gitarre.
